My new single, “Will The Circle Be Unbroken” is out now! Not only can you hear it in all the usual places, but there are also two videos too: one for “Circle” and one for the B-side “See That My Grave Is Kept Clean”.

Initially this was just meant to be a photo shoot, but I was keen to try capture some video too, and James, the photographer, was down for it. I knew we wouldn’t have long in the building so I needed to choose material I knew really well, that I’d be able to nail in a couple of takes. I picked “Will The Circle Be Unbroken” and “See That My Grave Is Kept Clean” – songs I used to cover a lot during my early years as an artist. There was quite a lot of pressure on us as we weren’t able to do any pre-production work – we basically rocked up to the building at 9am, spent 10 minutes walking around, then had to start filming. I think the fading grandeur of Bon Accord Baths lent so much gravity to the songs. Both are around 100 years old, yet focus on the timeless theme of life after death. “Circle” originated as a Christian hymn, and deals with the loss of one’s mother – “Grave” confronts one’s own mortality and was written by Blind Lemon Jefferson.

It was also a joy to work on something so minimal and sparse, with nowhere to hide. No A.I., no extensive mixing sessions, just a guitar, a vocal, and reverb from a natural space.
